Planning and Teaching the 2008 KS3 PoS
The course is built around the major content strands defined in the 2008 PoS and aims to:
- familiarise teachers with the aims and content of the new KS3 PoS
- demonstrate ways in which outline activities and depth studies can combine to create a coherent scheme of work across KS3
- demonstrate how topics and concepts currently taught can be integrated within the new PoS framework
- demonstrate a range of teaching activities that can be used to teach the new PoS effectively and assess pupils’ progress
- increase teachers’ confidence and ability to plan schemes of work for the new PoS and help them look forward to teaching it
Ideally this course would be held for between 18 and 24 teachers but I have run it with larger numbers!
What's special about this course?
Your delegates won't just sit and listen - they'll be taking part in demonstration activities that they can use next week, next term and next year.
This isn't a hastily thought out course, cobbled together in response to the 2008 KS3 - but quite the reverse. In many ways the new KS3 PoS has emerged from ideas that we developed at SHP and have been advocating and trialling in courses for the last 3 years.
I'll cover:
- all the major content strands of the 2008 PoS, examining how they can be linked to, and emerge from, your existing coverage of common topics
- demonstrating how to cover outline material enjoyably, effectively, actively and briefly to create room for depth-studies that pupils enjoy
- suggesting how to integrate concepts and processes through the content strands
It will be enjoyable, active, challenging and fun!
'Lots of splendid ideas to use and thoughts about adapting what I do'.
‘Superb! I feel quite revitalized’.

Feedback from Delegates
Delegates were asked for their overall comments on the course:
Very enjoyable - engaging and fun whilst still rooted in the history and how to teach it well.
Really thought-provoking day. I know I'll make good use of the materials and approaches.
Lovely. You spoilt all other inset for me!
Fabulous! Easily the best course I have been on because it was so useful. I'm really looking forward to trying some of these activities out.
[This course has given me] a feeling that most things are 'do-able'
