Teaching Resources, Gallery Planning, Multi-Media et al!
I have been fortunate to work, on a freelance basis, for some very different sites – Thackray Medical Museum, The Galleries of Justice and Vindolanda.
In each case my task was two–fold:
1. To create a resource pack tailored precisely to the needs of teachers and students and which therefore encourages them to use the site again and again
2. To improve the quality of site-work, making pupils and students think historically, linking visits into genuine historical investigations begun and completed back in school
With extensive knowledge of school needs (particularly relating to the revision of the KS3 National Curriculum for 2008 and revised GCSE and A level specifications from 2008 onwards) and widespread publishing experience I can ensure that materials, such as work-packs, fit design needs. In preparation we use packages such as Pageplus to design worksheets and other resources. This ensures that material both fits the available space and provides a clear guide to final designers. Recent involvement with the publishing of IT resources on CD and websites enables me to advise on how to make best use of these media to attract visits and support teachers.
Good resources should add to the excitement and interest of a visit and help raise standards of historical understanding.

Vindolanda - An Example
Resource packs for pupils and teachers, like those at KS2 and KS3 for Vindolanda, focus on National Curriculum and examination requirements.

Working with the designers, I advised on content and coverage, then wrote the GCSE resource pack, still widely used after 10 years.
