Interactive Days for A–Level Students

I run courses for A-Level students on 'The Wars of the Roses', the 'Reign of Henry VII' and on other aspects of Tudor history.

So if you want to bring more 16-19 year olds to your museum or your site, this may be the way to do it.

These courses are attractive to schools because ....

... they're interactive

The courses require students to think and participate (for example, in directed role-plays) and to use and evaluate sources. This needs more concentration than a normal lecture and means that sessions are longer but achieve more educationally.

... they use my text books

Many schools use my A-Level book The Tudor Century and other titles I have edited in the Hodder Murray series [ see A-Level books ]

... they like my teaching style: it's effective

Teachers know my style of teaching from CPD courses they have attended and/or from their use of this website and the accompanying DVD. Increasingly teachers are finding that these kinds of interactive teaching sessions are more effective than putting students in front of a set of four academic lecturers.

Structuring the Course

Courses can be structured in a variety of ways, all of them successful.

For example, you can leave me to run the entire course for the day or we can can combine, using part of the day for museum or site staff to work with the students.

Feedback

On her school SLT evaluation form, Andrea McGuigan, Head of History at Cardinal Hume Catholic School, Gateshead wrote:

"Our seven Y12 Historians attended the “Thinking History” workshop at the Discovery Museum Newcastle. It was a fantastic day packed with enthusiasm, passion and quality historical teaching. Willing participants, armed with slices of bread, bibles and wooden swords, became immersed in the Tudor world and mind set, drawn in by Ian’s unceasing enthusiasm and captivating delivery. Within this lively context students tackled complex issues such as change over time and relative significance of factors with ease. As a teacher I too came away with a great deal: a large shot of enthusiasm and a wealth of ideas for integrating active teaching approaches across all key stages. Undoubtedly the best A’ level course I’ve attended."

Tudor Course at Discovery Museum - An Example

The 'Tudor Day' was originally planned as a single day course by the Discovery Museum, Newcastle to run in conjunction with their Tudor exhibition; a high level of interest from schools & colleges in the area meant that it was repeated on a second day.
